gifts of kindness: building stronger cincinnati communities!

Gifts of Kindness

Donations to Habitat for Humanity of Greater Cincinnati don’t only come in labor or monetary form; they can come as brand new refrigerators from Whirlpool, donated windows from Champion Windows, or as stairs from Schutte Stair Company, a local Cincinnati stair company who has been donating stairs for almost 25 years. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Cincinnati is very fortunate to be propelled forward by local businesses and national corporations who generously donate their products and services to help us create decent, affordable housing. These types of donations are called Gifts of Kindness (GIK) donations, and they are vital as we work to control the costs of building and rehabbing. All Gifts of Kindness donations further Habitat for Humanity’s mission exponentially. The generosity of our GIK donors continuously overwhelms and inspires us.

Schutte Stair Company has been donating the indoor stairs on all Cincinnati area Habitat for Humanity homes for almost 25 years. Even through the great recession, the company continued to donate services because President Bob Schutte believes it’s important to always give back to the community, even during the hard times. Schutte refused to accept payment during this period from HFHGC, only asking that our organization would pray for his business. The entire Habitat team was more than willing to do so, and Schutte Stair Company is still making stairs for Habitat homes to this day. Schutte Stair Company always responds to our new service requests with “Thank you for your order!” Now, we would like to thank everyone at Schutte Stair Company for their incredible kindness. Thank you!

Champion Windows has partnered with us since 2011, donating windows and roofs on one or two rehabs each year.  Amazingly, Champion Windows extends their Lifetime Warranty to the fortunate Habitat homebuyers for these homes.

Classic Metal Roofs has donated metal roofing material on nine homes since 2012.  These metal roofs will last more than 50 years and are more energy efficient than the typical asphalt, shingle roof.

Apollo Home – Heating, Cooling & Plumbing has donated interior plumbing and a free HVAC system on one rehab each year for the last four years.

IEBW Local 212 recently wired four houses as part of their service to the community.

Frost Brown Todd, Graydon Head, Commonwealth Title, Northwest Title and First Title provide their services on most property acquisitions that we make.

Prominent Title Agency provides pro bono closing service for the sale of every home to a Habitat homebuyer.

Habitat for Humanity International has established ongoing partnerships with several companies that provide products for Habitat builds across the country, including here locally:
Whirlpool Corporation donates a new range and a new refrigerator for every Habitat for Humanity home completed in the United States.  2016 marks the 17th consecutive year of this great support from Whirlpool.

Yale Locks and Hardware has provided interior door knobs since 2001.

Dow Chemical has supplied rigid foam board insulation since 1994.

Valspar has partnered with Habitat since the beginning and has provided paint for Habitat houses since 2002.

Schneider Electric has been a partner since 2000, donating the electric panel that goes in each Habitat home.

We are grateful for these partners and the product and services that they provide.

Even with all of these great partners, less than 15% of the cost of each home is comprised of donated material or services, creating the opportunity for other partners to join in helping us to serve more families.

“It’s overwhelming to think about,” said Dawn Stutz, Vice President of Operations for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Cincinnati. “I reflect on all these companies that give to our cause without asking for anything in return, and I’m always overwhelmed. They just do it because it’s the right thing to do.”

These amazingly generous businesses have given an enormous benefit to Habitat for Humanity homeowners. With the support of Gift in Kind Donations, HFHGC can stretch funds even further so we may help more families. Everyone deserves an opportunity to build a better life. Thank you to each and every donor and volunteer who helps families build strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter.
